Barry's Bay

  • Vehicle is required.

Barry’s Bay is the place you want to be for rural medical education. We are a small group of family docs that serve the community in Emergency, Family, Hospitalist, Palliative, and Geriatric medicine. We work with learners one-on-one and take teaching very seriously.  We are supported by the fabulous St. Francis Memorial Hospital, which is connected to the medical clinic also housing the new Madawaska Valley Family Health Team. The FHT supports our community with NPs, SW, Dietitian services.

We are located between Algonquin Park (less than one hour away) and Ottawa (two hours away) and are deemed the only community in Southern Ontario both rural and remote. Your preceptor will take great pleasure in touring you around the area, exposing you to the multiple fun things to do here - going on hikes, ATVing, skating on frozen lakes, jamming with the blues band at the Wilno Tavern Restaurant, taking in the various farmer’s markets, driving the Artisan Studio Tour, golfing at our local beautiful 18-hole course, cruising the quirky downtown shops, and at the end of the day, sitting by the bonfire.

Here is some feedback from recent learners:

"Barry's Bay is an incredible place to stay as both a learner and a visitor. I was fortunate to spend five weeks at St. Francis Memorial Hospital for my Family Medicine clerkship rotation and was instantly welcomed by such a kind, caring, and passionate multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. I loved the comradery and broad scope of practice, engaging with patients in the clinic, emergency room, and on the hospital wards. The opportunity for learning was unparalleled, with one-on-one engagement with preceptors, daily teaching, as well as independent clinical skill development. After work, I enjoyed the beauty of Barry's Bay while cycling around town and visiting local restaurants. I absolutely loved my time in Barry's Bay and I cannot wait to return!”

“My placement in Barry’s Bay has been one of the biggest highlights of my medical education thus far! In contrast to city centre hospitals, it was incredible to work at a hospital where all the staff are friends that know each other by name. Moreover, a medical learner, Barry’s Bay is definitely the place to be! The hands-on experiences to be had there are unparalleled, thanks to the many hats that you have to wear as a rural physician. You’re simultaneously an internist, emergency physician, family doctor and more, and you’re responsible for performing many skills by yourself! Add on the amazing natural beauty and incredibly friendly community, and there’s no reason not to go!”

"I loved my time working with Dr. Malinowski in Barry's Bay. I was able to gain knowledge and understanding into what working in rural medicine is like. I was introduced to many new experiences both in the Emergency Room and in the Family Practice and got plenty of chances to sharpen my own skills as well as learn from professionals in the field. The nature in the community is beautiful with many hikes to go on, and the town and residents are very inviting and kind. The experience is well worth the trip.”
